Shutting down

7 05 2010

I regret to inform you that I am shutting down KiwiComics. The reason should come as no surprise by this time.

With nearly 40.000 downloads it has been a quite pleasant experience. I will not tell you that I don’t have time, because that would be a lie. I just prioritize differently at this stage in my life. I’ve started to live life more fully now (party!), and I am almost done with my master thesis, and I haven’t have the urge to read manga in a long, long time. It’s funny how creating a manga reader has had that effect.

If I’m to enjoy the last of my college experience, then the time to do so is now.

You may have noted that there are currently some issues with updates of manga. I believe that OneManga has made changes to  their web pages which breaks KiwiComics. This will probably not be fixed. Time to search for another manga reader! Post your alternatives in the comment section below!

Some of you have been emailing me, asking for an iPad version, but that will not happen. The thing is that the KiwiComics is somewhere in the moral grey-zone in my country (it could be argued that it simply is a web browser for OneManga), which is one of the reasons that I never asked for any money for the app or added it to appstore.

I hope some of you have enjoyed KiwiComics (and according to your ratings, which is above 4 of 5, and comments on ModMyRepo you really have!). I would also like to thank you people that visited this blog. It’s one thing to rate an app, but another one completely to take time of your busy schedule and write feedback on this blog!

As a last note: the license for the source code for this application has been changed to “Do whatever you like with it, without restrictions of any kind”.

I arrived at the site hoping to see some new announcement related to iPad. Sad to see a good app go. Thank you for developing such a nice app for all the manga fans out there :)

Damn what a letdown, but we totally understand your reasons. Thanks for the wonderful app while it lasted!

here’s hoping someone will pick up the code and fix the onemanga problems, together with adding support for Manga Fox, Manga Volume and Manga Toshokan. That would make it the ultimate app for manga reading!

Damn this is a good app. I’m sorr to hear your getting out of the game and congrats on ur masters. I had decided to fork the source a few months ago. I just haven’t had much time recently. There is some hope. I was thinking about releasing an iPad app based off this, I hope u don’t mind Kiwi.
I don’t plan to get much done untill after 4.0 is released.
I’ll post more on my blog about it.

Thanks for all the work – best reader ever.

Hope someone continues where the project is left off.
Also an iPad app would be awesome.

Please, Please, Please continue this project.

Also on a side note:
The iPhone 3GS has a resolution of 480×320
the new iPhone has a resolution of 960×640
and the iPad has a resolution of 1024 × 768

How do u account for all that?

Anyways best of luck man. This is the one app that makes my iPod Touch worth it.

As of right now I’m still going over kiwi’s code. AMAZING guy.
Right now I dont know how much will be the same once I’m done. All I have is a few good ideas and a few directions that I would like to move in to.

As for iPhone support. I’m not sure what I will do on that end. I really only had thoughts about the iPad. However, we all may be shocked once 4.0 hits the shelves so keep checking my tweets and site and we shall see how this plays out.

So how do I get the source code?

At the risk of sounding like a total noob, what format are the mangas that kiwi reads? would it be possible to ssh new mangas into the folder?

Damn what bad news. I tried differend manga/comic readers. But nothing comes close to kiwi comics. :( i hope some one else can take this over.

Big thanks to the maker of this app. We understand your decision.
