KiwiComics – Yet Another Manga Reader

4 01 2010
You might be screaming to yourself: WHY?! Why yet another Manga Reader for the iPhone? Well there where three reasons.
  • The first was that the existing applications where very and I mean very unstable. Having to restart the apps was painful.
  • The second reason was that I wanted a reader that I could use for reading the latest chapter offline as well as online browsing.
  • The third reason was that it seemed so simple. It was a fun experience and the perfect choice for learning objective-c and the iPhone API.

I recently downloaded KiwiComics off of Cydia and it is a great app. I love that the interface is very basic – search, open, add as favourite, read the chapter you want. I did not know of the site OneManga before this app but checked it out soon after. Great collection of manga!

One suggestion/future enhancement I’d like to see is to ability of tap to zoom. I found in general the traditional landscape view when reading manga is perfect but sometimes the text in speech bubbles can become quite small. Without the ability to zoom in or out I can’t read the text. Hope to see this added in the future!

Again, great work and app!

Very good suggestion indeed. I was worried that if I implemented pinch to zoom people would start to focus on the zoom level instead and destroy the reader experience, but tap to zoom should solve that. I use double tap already to go back to the chapter list (single tap lead to too many accidental clicks) but I’m sure I can come up with something better for going back.

first: your app is awsome. Works fine for me.

How about a two finger tap to go back to the chapterlist?

i want to send a big heartfelt thanks to you for such an streamlined and easy to use app. as for reasons stated above i have avoided previous readers, but this one is very intuitive.

even if the feedback is little, i hope you will still keep tweaking your app for the better, i need my hayate/railgun fix :D

also, the only issue i have currently is that the springboard icon is horribly large and square, possible fix soon?

hmm, looks like dependencies are saying i have to be on 3.1.2 to upgrade kiwicomics

its alright for now, im on a 3g touch with tethered jailbreak so i cant be asked to upgrade at the moment, i assume the issue is fixed though haha

I use CoreData in the iPhone API for caching the comics and it requires 3.0 so there is no easy way to backport short of rewriting the whole caching section. Sorry about that.

It’s a great app i was wondering on your blog would u talk about the process of building this app what kinds of problems did u face and so on

Maybe. Sounds like a lot of work that could be spent on the app itself. :)

Any specific question you had in mind?
